Terms of Service
Last updated: 13 October 2026
These terms govern the use of Booktation, the web app for reading notes available at www.booktation.com. By creating an account you accept them, so please read them carefully. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms limits the rights the law gives you.
1. Who provides the service
Booktation is provided by Adastra S.r.l.s. (“we”). These are its details:
Adastra S.r.l.s.
- Registered office
- Via Melisurgo 4, 80133 Napoli (NA), Italia
- Tax code and VAT no.
- 10177491213
- Shareholders
- Single shareholder (single-member company)
- info@booktation.com
- Certified email (PEC)
- adastrasrls@altapec.it
2. The service
Booktation lets you keep a library of the books you read and take notes on them by voice, from a photo of the page or by typing, with the emotions they gave you if you like; it turns voice and photos into text, lets you search all your notes, finds links between notes of different books, suggests books to read from your notes, lets you export your notes and, if you want, publish reviews and read with others in private book clubs (reading groups). You can use it in the browser or install it on your home screen; it needs an internet connection.
We keep improving Booktation, so features can change, under the conditions of section 10.
3. Your account
- You must be at least 14 years old: you confirm it when you sign up. If you are under 18, you need the consent of a parent or guardian to buy PRO.
- Give a valid email address and keep your password safe: you are responsible for what happens with your account. Tell us at info@booktation.com if you think someone else is using it.
- An account is personal: do not share it and do not create accounts to get around the limits of the plans.
4. Plans, prices and AI transcriptions
- Free: free, with no time limit. Unlimited books, written notes, search and links; 10 AI transcriptions a month.
- PRO: €4.99 a month or €39 a year. 300 AI transcriptions a month and the other PRO features described on the pricing page.
Prices are in euros and include VAT. An AI transcription is each voice note, page photo or cover photo that Booktation turns into text; photos of a shelf count one in three within the same scan. The monthly allowance starts again at each new period (the date is shown in your Profile); unused transcriptions do not carry over and have no cash value. Written notes, search and links never count.
We may change prices and allowances. A new price applies to an active subscription only from the following renewal, and we will tell you at least 30 days before, so you can cancel first.
5. Free trial
When it is offered, you can try PRO for free for 14 days, once per account. To start the trial you enter a payment method at checkout: if you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription starts and the first payment is charged automatically. We will remind you by email before the trial ends. If you cancel during the trial you pay nothing.
6. How the contract is concluded
- The contract for the Free plan is concluded when you create your account.
- The PRO contract is concluded when you confirm the payment, or the start of the trial, on Stripe’s payment page. The steps are: you choose the plan in your Profile, read the summary with the price, the automatic renewal and the right of withdrawal, then confirm on Stripe.
- Before confirming you can correct the data you entered, by going back or by editing it on Stripe’s page.
- After confirming you receive an email with the summary and the link to these terms. The date at the top of this page shows the version in force: if you need the version you accepted, write to us and we will send it to you.
- Languages of the contract: Italian and English.
7. Payment, renewal and cancellation
- Payments are processed by Stripe. The subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the price in force, until you cancel it.
- You can cancel at any time from your Profile (“Cancel subscription”, or “Manage subscription”). Until the end of the period you can undo it with “Resume”. PRO stays active until the end of the period already paid, then your account moves to Free: your notes and your library stay. Cancelling is not withdrawing: for the right of withdrawal see section 8.
- Apart from the right of withdrawal (section 8), the changes described in section 10 and the cases provided for by law, we do not refund periods already started.
- If a payment fails, Stripe tries again for a few days; if it keeps failing, your account moves to Free. Nothing is deleted because of a failed payment.
8. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer, you can withdraw from the PRO contract within 14 days of its conclusion, without giving a reason and at no cost (arts. 52 and following of the Italian Consumer Code, Legislative Decree 206/2005).
The easiest way: in your Profile, in the box of your plan, you find “Withdraw from the contract here” for the whole 14 days. You check the details already filled in and press “Confirm withdrawal”: the subscription ends right away and you receive by email a receipt with the date and time.
You can also send us a clear statement (for example: “I withdraw from the Booktation PRO subscription”) at info@booktation.com, from your account’s email address, or use the withdrawal form in section 9. It is enough to send it before the 14 days are over.
Free trial. If the subscription starts with a free trial, the 14 days run from the start of the trial and do not start again with the first payment, because before you start we tell you clearly when and how much you will be charged (Court of Justice of the EU, case C-565/22). If you withdraw during the trial you pay nothing.
Refund. We refund you within 14 days of the withdrawal, with the same payment method and at no cost. If you asked for PRO to start right away, we refund what you paid minus the part corresponding to the days of PRO already used (art. 57); if you did not ask for it, we refund everything. Your notes and your library stay, with the Free plan.
9. Withdrawal form
Model withdrawal form (Annex I, part B, of the Italian Consumer Code). Fill it in and send it only if you want to withdraw from the contract:
- To: Adastra S.r.l.s., Via Melisurgo 4, 80133 Napoli (NA), Italia, email info@booktation.com.
- I hereby give notice that I withdraw from my contract for the provision of the following service: Booktation PRO (monthly / yearly).
- Concluded on: …………
- Name of the consumer: …………
- Address of the consumer: …………
- Email of the Booktation account: …………
- Signature (only if this form is sent on paper): …………
- Date: …………
10. Changes to the service
We may change Booktation’s features for technical or security reasons, or to improve them, at no cost to you. If a change makes the use of PRO worse in a way that is not negligible, we will tell you at least 30 days before. You can then withdraw free of charge within 30 days of the notice or of the change, with a refund of the part paid and not used (art. 135-vicies semel of the Italian Consumer Code).
11. Legal guarantee
For PRO you have the legal guarantee of conformity provided for digital services (arts. 135-octies and following of the Italian Consumer Code). If PRO does not work as described, write to us at info@booktation.com: we will bring it back into conformity within a reasonable time or, if that is not possible, you are entitled to a price reduction or to terminate the contract.
12. Your content
- Your notes, photos and reviews remain yours. You give us only the permission needed to store them, process them (including through the providers listed in the Privacy Policy) and show them to you and to the people you choose.
- Your notes are private, except the ones you choose to show to a reading group (section 13) and the copy of a note you choose to make visible to the readers of the same book (section 14). When you publish a review or make a note visible, you allow us to show it on Booktation, free of charge and for as long as it is published; you can delete it at any time.
- You are responsible for what you save and publish: it must not break the law or the rights of others. Photos of book pages are for your personal study: do not use Booktation to share or distribute protected works.
13. Reading groups (beta)
- Groups are private: you join only by invitation, with a link or by email, and a group has at most 30 members. A Free account is enough to join.
- In a group you show the members the notes you choose, with your name. Share only short quotations, with the title and author of the book: do not copy chapters or long parts of protected works. The same goes for book proposals, the lines of the club diary and notices written in the group.
- The person who created a group can remove a member (their notes leave the group with them), turn off the invitation link and delete the group.
- If you invite someone by email, enter only the addresses of people you know and who expect your invitation. To prevent abuse you can invite at most 10 people at a time and 30 a day.
- Groups are a feature being tested (beta) and may change. If we decide to close them, we will tell you first; your notes always stay in your library.
14. Reviews and readers’ notes
Reviews are written by readers registered on Booktation. Next to the name we show “Has the book in their library” when the author has that book in their Booktation library; we do not check that they have read or bought it. We do not pay for or reward reviews. Public reviews are listed by “useful” votes and then by date; the average also includes private ratings, anonymously.
Readers’ notes are copies of notes that a reader chooses, one by one, to make visible to the other registered readers who have the same book: text only, up to 1000 characters, without links or handles of other networks, with “Reader” or the first name and initial, at most 5 per reader and book. A note further than where a reader has got to stays covered, and every reader can cover a note as a spoiler or report it (section 16). As in groups, share only short quotations, with the book they come from, and nothing promotional. You can take a note back at any time.
15. Acceptable use
When you use Booktation, you must not:
- try to access other people’s data or accounts, or get around the security measures and the limits of the plans;
- use automated means to extract data (scraping) or to overload the service, including mass use of AI transcriptions or invitations;
- copy, decompile or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it;
- publish reviews, make notes visible to the readers of a book or write in groups content that is illegal, false, offensive, promotional, off topic, or that contains other people’s personal data.
We may remove content that breaks these rules. In serious or repeated cases we may suspend or close the account. We always tell you why, as explained in section 16.
16. Reports and moderation
Anyone, even without an account, can report to us content they believe is illegal or against these terms (a review, a note visible to the readers of a book, a name, content in a group) from the page Report content or by writing to dsa@booktation.com; in the app, readers can also report a review, a note shown in their group or a note visible to the readers of their book. Reports are examined by a person, without automated systems, carefully and without delay.
If we hide your content or restrict your account, we write to you with the reason, the rule of these terms or of the law the decision is based on and how to challenge it: you can reply to our email and ask us to review it, or go to court. The person who sent the report receives the outcome.
Adastra S.r.l.s. is a microenterprise: for this reason it is not required to have the internal complaint-handling system or to publish the transparency reports provided for by Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 (art. 19). The review on request described above is always available.
17. AI features
Transcriptions, text recognition, links, explanations, summaries, suggested emotions and recommended books are generated automatically and can contain mistakes: check them before relying on them. They are not professional advice. How your content is sent to AI providers, and how to switch off links and search by meaning, is explained in the Privacy Policy.
18. Book data from third parties
Titles, authors, covers and descriptions come mainly from Open Library and, when needed, from Google Books; for Italian books, the data of the printed edition (pages, year, ISBN) from OPAC SBN – ICCU (licence CC BY 3.0 IT), for other books the page count also from the library catalogues K10plus and Library of Congress. We cannot guarantee that they are complete or correct, and you can edit them in your library: a page count you enter yourself is never changed. Ratings from outside sources are shown separately from Booktation readers’ reviews.
19. Availability
We work to keep Booktation available and your data safe, but the service may be interrupted for maintenance, updates or problems of our providers. We recommend exporting your notes from time to time: you can do it whenever you like from your Profile.
20. Liability
Within the limits allowed by law, we are not liable for indirect damage or for damage caused by events beyond our reasonable control. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence (art. 1229 of the Italian Civil Code), nor the rights that consumer protection law gives you.
21. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from your Profile: any subscription is cancelled and your data is erased as described in the Privacy Policy. We may close an account for serious breaches of these terms; for other reasons, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice so you can export your data.
22. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We will tell you about important changes by email or in the app at least 15 days before they apply. If you do not accept them, you can delete your account before then; if you keep using Booktation afterwards, the new terms apply.
23. Applicable law and disputes
These terms are governed by Italian law. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory rules of the country where you live, and the competent court is that of your place of residence or domicile. For any problem, write to us first at info@booktation.com: we will try to solve it together.
24. Point of contact
Single point of contact for users and authorities (arts. 11 and 12 of Regulation (EU) 2022/2065): dsa@booktation.com. Languages: Italian and English.
25. Contact
